25% of men experiencing hair loss will start noticing it by the age of just 21. Two-thirds of men will experience hair loss by the age of 35. Some men experience hair loss more significantly than others, and our understanding of this reasoning is due to the genetic sensitivity to the testosterone metabolite (breakdown product) called DHT. All guys have DHT but some are more sensitive than others to it, which is why one of the mainstays for treatment of male pattern baldness is lowering the DTH level by using a “DHT blocker” such as finasteride or dutasteride. These medications are not really blockers of DHT, they work by temporarily inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. Contrary to popular belief, taking medications such as finasteride tablets will not lower your testosterone, if anything it could only slightly increase your testosterone, however before getting too excited about this, testosterone will get shunted to a different pathway for breakdown to maintain its stable levels as it is always being made as well.
